Hello, my name is Linda Jean McNabb. I am here to talk to you about something that most of us do not want to think about much less talk about; The world-wide, largely silent and invisible epidemic of child sexual assault and abuse. This is close to my heart because I was gang-raped at age 13 outside a church dance by a group of boys. I never reported it because I felt paralyzed into silence by shame and fear. My childhood was already difficult and this event cemented my fate for decades to come. I'd begun substance abuse at 12 and by 20 I was an alcoholic. It was not until I was nearly 30 years old that I began to even understand what had happened to me and was able to ask for help. After a lifetime of self-destructive behavior and self-medicating, to escape from the pain of my traumatic childhood and suicidal depression, I was finally able to forgive the past and make a new life for myself. Today I am happy and living a beneficial life.

Through my own healing a vision of a world where the rape of a child is no more was born. And it is through this vision that I see many solutions to end this epidemic. It is my joy to now be a resource I didn't have.

Sexual abuse & assault, physical & mental abuse, upon our children is a menacing, crippling legacy which has passed from one generation to the next for a very long time. And for every incident that is reported there are many more that are not. And for each registered sex offender and abuser, there are many more that have never been caught or reported. I assure you, if we knew the real numbers of this epidemic, we'd be shaken to our cores. The cycle of assault and abuse continues to thrive because many of the victims either grow-up and maintain the victim role or become perpetrators themselves. And many times the adults who were child victims are unable to protect and/or empower their children, so the cycle continues. IMMEDIATE ATTENTION TO THIS EPIDEMIC IS OF AN URGENT NATURE AND WE CAN NOT STOP UNTIL IT IS ERADICATED FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH. We can and we must shine a very bright light in every corner of our world upon this epidemic until there is nowhere for anyone to hide.

The main targets of abuse and attack are babies, children, and young people, because they are the most vulnerable. While there is a percentage of perpetrators that are strangers, it is becoming apparent that the majority of the perpetrators are those who have easy access to our children and live among us as family, friends, and the very people we think we can trust. We must educate and inform our children and young people along with the parents and care takers of the full extent of this epidemic. We must move out of the fear and move from a position of weakness into a position of strength and real power. A solution oriented approach will protect and prevent attacks and abuses by empowering our children, young people, parents and care takers. Laws are not enough. We must do more. Collaboration and cooperation of all the people of the world person-to-person and community-by-community is how we'll realize this vision of a world where all children are safe.

Adult victims of childhood assaults and abuse, including those who have perpetrated assaults and abuse upon others must be offered help so that through their own healing and insights arising from that healing they can and will become an integral part of the solution. It is time for us as a society to provide help to all because when any member of society is without hope they are a danger to all. We must provide hope to all, including the perpetrators. We must also make the help easily accessible to all would be perpetrators. And, while offering that help, we will continue to protect our children until such time that we are able to end the cycle once and for all.

There is an army of people, like me, who were abused and assaulted as children, out there walking around, living their lives. Many are suffering and many are already seeking help. It is this army that can, and I predict will be instrumental in implementing many solutions to end this cycle. Who better to know how to teach prevention, than one who has been its victim.

The money that you contribute today will go towards supporting the design of a model that can easily be replicated millions of times to be used in communities world-wide. The first piece of the model will be a film depicting several real life scenarios of potentially dangerous situations, many of which may initially appear to be safe and then illustrating how quickly things can turn bad. This will teach children how to protect themselves through awareness. PREVENTION IS KEY. We will teach them what to do if they are harmed and how to know if they have been harmed. The film will also teach basics, like the "buddy system," and computer safety. We will show how we can all be more observant and what to do to help our neighbors who might need help. The film will be shown in communities to adults and children followed by a question and answer period. We will look to assign people in each community as a resource for children to come to for assistance. Local phone numbers and agencies will also be provided. PREVENTATIVE MEASURES CAN BE EASILY IMPLEMENTED AND ALL WE NEED IS AN ORGANIZED EFFORT. THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE. We have the resources and technology available to us right here, right now. And really the cost isn't huge when you figure that we can make one model and replicate it all over the world. What is the cost compared to the cost of human lives and suffering? We cannot afford not to do this. HOW MANY MORE CHILDREN HAVE TO BE DEVASTED OR DIE BEFORE WE DO SOMETHING?

We are one human family and it is time to come together for the future of our children. Do not wait for the world to change. Do not wait for someone else to do it. We can and will make it impossible for any child to be harmed. Together we can decide to stop the rape of our children. Let's just do it. Make the decision today, right now, in your heart.
